LIU Brooklyn welcomed more than 300 teachers from across 15 New York City school districts and New York City Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña on February 1 for a Sanford Inspire Professional Development event. LIU partnered with the New York City Department of Education to present the program, which focused on providing educators with proven tools and strategies to create an interactive, inspiring environment that encourages student learning at all grade levels.

“I would like to thank LIU for all that the University provided to the teachers of my superintendency,” said Superintendent Karen Watts. “What a great opportunity for them to be out of their high schools and on a college campus to hear and discuss new ideas about teaching and learning.”

Renowned experts in topics ranging from bilingual education to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics presented to the educators over the course of the free professional development event, discussing the principles of Sanford Inspire as they apply to their areas of expertise.

“Our collaboration with LIU and Sanford Inspire has sparked a renewed passion in our teacher leaders to further develop their practices, better understand their students’ obstacles to learning, and work collaboratively to plan interdisciplinary learning experiences,” said Superintendent Michael Prayor. “We are truly grateful for this amazing opportunity to impact our school communities.”

Sanford Inspire is one of two innovative PreK-12 education programs that provide a comprehensive approach to student learning and development. The research-based initiatives, based on the vision of legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, are being carried out on a national scale through the Sanford Education Collaborative, which is comprised of nine universities around the country.

LIU is spearheading the Northeast regional expansion of the Sanford programs and the next Inspire professional development opportunity is scheduled for June 9, 2016.
