LIU Pharmacy Students Excel at the Pharmacists Society of the State of New York Mid-Winter Conference

Long Island University,

The Pharmacists Society of the State of New York (PSSNY) held its annual mid-winter conference in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. the weekend of January 30, 2016. A record number of 12 LIU Pharmacy students attended along with 90 other students from throughout the state.

This year, LIU Pharmacy had two entries for the competitions held throughout the weekend. For the poster competition, Anastasiya Shor (P6), on behalf of other team members Inna Abramova (P6) and Dr. Mark Klang of Memorial Sloan Kettering, presented a study to investigate whether a lidocaine and bupivacaine mixture would be stable and compatible in a unit dose 5ml BD syringe without protection from light and at room temperature.  They won first place and received a $250 grant for the PSSNY chapter to enhance the chapter’s membership experience.

LIU Pharmacy students Anastasiya Shor, Ivan Shoukhardin (P4), and Tayyeb Din (P3) took third place in the Business Plan Competition with a presentation entitled “Bronx, Breathe Easy!” presenting a fictitious AMSCOP Pharmacy Plan for Management of Asthma. Set up in a similar way as the television show “Shark Tank,” the students “pitched” their plan to a panel of three judges (potential investors).

Throughout the weekend all students were exposed to the inner workings of PSSNY as the statewide professional society representing all pharmacists attending continuing education activities and committee meetings. The next event will be the Summer Convention to be held in Rye, N.Y. and students are already looking forward to attending.
