LIU Brooklyn observed teachers engaging students in some of the everyday practices and lessons included in the Sanford Harmony Program at P.S. 65 in Staten Island on February 11. In line with the New York City Department of Education’s “Respect for All Week,” activities focused on lessons about inclusion, mutual respect, and empathy.

The Sanford Harmony Program, disseminated by LIU in more than 50 schools in the Northeast region, promotes a foundation in positive peer relationships. By learning to understand and engage effectively with one another at an early age, children are more able to minimize future conflicts and misunderstandings.

“Through the Sanford Harmony Program, our students have come to recognize how important it is to ‘Respect people’s feelings, even if it doesn’t mean anything to you, it could mean everything to them,’” said P.S. 65’s Guidance Counselor Liz Rodriguez. “They are are also realizing that they will be more successful when they work together, and when they don’t try to put an ‘I’ in the word ‘team’ thanks to the Harmony Program.”

Sanford Harmony is one of two innovative PreK-12 education programs that provide a comprehensive approach to student learning and development. The research-based initiatives, based on the vision of legendary entrepreneur and philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, are being carried out on a national scale through the Sanford Education Collaborative, which is comprised of nine universities around the country, including LIU.
