LIU Pharmacy Joins the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education (NIPTE)

LIU Pharmacy Awarded $150,000 Shared Grant from NIPTE and FDA
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The National Institute for Pharmaceutical Technology and Education (NIPTE) today announced that the Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Long Island University (LIU Pharmacy) has joined the organization as its 16th member.
“The addition of LIU Pharmacy will allow NIPTE to expand its research and training capabilities,” said Dr. Vadim J. Gurvich, NIPTE’s executive director and research associate professor at the University of Minnesota. “We expect it to play a significant role in our formulation development and characterization research initiatives as well as training programs for pharmaceutical industry”.
“Taking part in NIPTE’s vigorous research agenda will create transformational opportunities for our students to participate in impactful work alongside our award-winning pharmaceutical scientists,” said Dr. John M. Pezzuto, dean of LIU Pharmacy. “NIPTE’s mission to increase the pharmaceutical industry’s understanding of product development and manufacturing aligns with LIU Pharmacy’s vision to advance the safety, efficacy and efficiency of the industry and the evolution of its professionals.”
As member of NIPTE, LIU Pharmacy will contribute to NIPTE’s Critical Path Manufacturing Sector Research Initiative program. LIU will share a $150,000 grant from NIPTE and the Food and Drug Administration with fellow researchers at the University of Maryland Baltimore and the University of Puerto Rico, studying biorelevant dissolution in tablet-based pharmaceutical products.
“Under the leadership of world-renowned researcher Dr. Pezzuto, LIU Pharmacy continues to reach ever higher levels of achievement,” said Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, president of LIU. “Our collaborations with NIPTE will provide LIU Pharmacy students, who already benefit from our affiliation with the nation’s top medical centers, access to new opportunities to take part in meaningful research, advancing the quality of pharmaceutical products and improving access and outcomes for patients around the world.”
LIU Pharmacy celebrates its 130th anniversary in 2016, having been founded in 1886 as New York’s first College of Pharmacy. The College has expanded its partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry under Dr. Pezzuto, a past winner of the American Association of College’s of Pharmacy’s prestigious Volwiler Research Award, with impactful research in the University’s three state-of-the-art institutes: the Lachman Institute for Pharmaceutical Analysis, the Joan B. and Samuel J. Williamson Institute for Pharmacometrics, and the Natoli Engineering Institute for Industrial Pharmacy Development and Research.
