New York City public educator wins nationally-recognized Outstanding Teacher award at Sanford Education Collaborative anniversary celebration

October 6, 2015 – LIU, part of a nationwide initiative that is introducing the Sanford Harmony program to schools and districts in New York City, nominated elementary school teacher Thania Hernandez of P.S. 9 in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, New York for “Outstanding Teacher of the Year” winning the award for her dedication to the vision of the program at the first-year anniversary celebration of the Sanford Education Collaborative at National University on September 30th.

Sanford Harmony, based on the vision of philanthropist T. Denny Sanford, was developed at Arizona State University and San Diego-based National University and is now leading and administering the program’s nationwide expansion through its Sanford Education Center.

“Ms. Hernandez has brought T. Denny Sanford’s vision of empowering young children into her classroom and is an inspiring teacher with a unique ability to make a personal connection with her students and their families to foster a caring community,” states LIU President Dr. Kimberly R. Cline.  

 “I am humbled and honored to accept this award,” states Ms. Hernandez. “The Sanford Harmony program asks students to focus on our shared commonalities while respecting our differences.” “Mr. Sanford’s vision is working towards bettering the lives of our students by fostering respect and cooperation,” shared Ms. Hernandez.
