Eligibility Requirements
May Commencement exercises are open to those students whose degrees were conferred in September 2012, January 2013 and to those who are candidates for graduation in May 2013. Students completing degree requirements during summer 2013 may petition to participate in the May 2013 ceremony. Such students must contact the Student Services Office no later than March 1, 2013.
For those who are candidates for graduation in May 2013, please be sure you have filed an Application for Degree. Please submit this graduation application by February 15, 2013, if you have not already done so. Completed applications must be returned to the Student Services Office, suite B by February 15 or your name will not appear in the commencement program.
Be sure to check with your academic advisor to confirm that ALL academic degree requirements will be completed. Don’t forget to settle outstanding financial commitments. Check the “HOLDS” link on your My LIU account to view holds, if any, on your record.
Diplomas and Transcripts
Official diplomas will not be awarded on the day of Commencement but will be available for pick-up in the Office of Student Services at the LIU Building in Riverhead beginning in August. Transcripts that contain notation of your conferred degree will be available June 1, and may be ordered online at www.credentials-inc.com/tplus/?ALUMTRO002755. All May 2013 diplomas not picked up by September 15 will be mailed to the home address in our system.
Cap & Gown
The black cap and gown, which you wear for Commencement, has a long tradition. Caps, gowns and hoods were first worn at university functions in Europe during the Middle Ages when monks and students found them necessary for warmth in the cold and drafty castles and centers of learning. Until well into the nineteenth century, it was customary for many American college students to wear gowns while in daily residence or at meals. This practice has ceased to exist and, except for some British and European schools, few colleges request students to wear gowns except at Commencement exercises.
Purchase Caps and Gowns by completing the Order Form and returning to the Office of Student Services at LIU Riverhead before April 26.
Price including tax is:
Bachelor’s Degree $48.98
Master’s Degree $87.53
Payment must be made at the time of purchase. Check or credit card is accepted. Make checks payable to Barnes and Noble. If you have any questions, please call 631-287-8325.
