Robert N. Altholz
Vice President for Finance and Treasurer
Robert N. Altholz has served as vice president for finance and treasurer at LIU since December 2003, overseeing the University's financial affairs and providing executive leadership as one of nine officers on its senior management team. Responsible for developing long- and short-term operating and capital budgets in support of the University's mission, he manages all treasury and central financial administrative functions; maintains banking and investment relationships; and interacts with investment bankers, bond rating agencies and external auditors. Mr. Altholz also has taken a leadership role in implementing a best practices initiative for the University, spearheading the conversion of legacy financial systems through the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
A certified public accountant who worked for Ernst & Young and Arthur Andersen, he began his career in higher education finance at Yale University, rising to assistant comptroller. His experience supervising investment accounting, disbursement, payroll, funds administration, and financial analysis and reporting at Yale led to an appointment at Saint Louis University in 1987.
After serving as Saint Louis' associate vice president and treasurer for eight years, Mr. Altholz was promoted to vice president for finance and business, while retaining the title of treasurer. As chief financial officer, he managed the financial functions of a multicampus institution with an operating budget of $500 million and an endowment of approximately $650 million. Four years after he became CFO, Moody's increased Saint Louis' rating to A1 (top 60 in the country) - a level at which it remained throughout his tenure.
Mr. Altholz, who holds a B.S. in economics from New York University and an M.B.A. from Bernard Baruch College, City University of New York, is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
